The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. -2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

I was listening to another sister in Christ talk about how she was done with this life and wanted Jesus to come back NOW. I can’t count the number of times that I have felt the same way. And then, God brought me to back to 2 Peter 3:9. I know the verse well. It’s usually in the middle of the free will debate. And yet, this time, God used this verse to convict me of my selfishness. When I think that I have reached my limit and begin to pray for Jesus to come back now, I am NOT thinking of those who God is being patient with; those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life but have not yet come to repentance and a saving faith in Jesus Christ. Instead, in my selfishness – in the midst of my pity party – I basically say: Lord, forget about the others! Come rescue me!

Heavenly Father, I fall before you convicted of my selfishness. Please forgive me for making life about me and not about you. Fill me with your Spirit so that I may endure what this world throws at me. And thank you for covering my sins with the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, now and forever. Amen!
